New Major in Art History at Manhattan College
Beginning in the fall semester of 2010, Manhattan College’s School of Arts will be offering a major in art history. The new major, the first for the College’s fine arts department, will examine art and architecture created from the ancient to the contemporary worlds within broad historical and cultural contexts.

Manhattan College To Hold Spring Commencement
College to award bachelor’s degrees to students in the adult degree completion program, master’s degrees to students in the Schools of Education and Engineering and Professional Diplomas to students in the School of Education
Manhattan College will award more than 300 degrees at its Spring Commencement on Wednesday, May 26. The ceremony will be held in the College’s Chapel of De La Salle and His Brothers. Dr. Noddings will be awarded an Honorary Doctor of Pedagogy. Bachelor’s degrees will be awarded to those in the adult degree completion program, along with master’s degrees awarded to those in the Schools of Education and Engineering.

College to honor Brother Louis DeThomasis, F.S.C., Chancellor, Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota and President, Christian Brothers Investment Services-European Union
Manhattan College will award more than 700 degrees in some 40 major fields of study from its five schools in arts, business, education, engineering and science at its 168th Undergraduate Commencement on Sunday, May 23. Students who completed their studies in September 2009, February 2010 and May 2010 will participate in the ceremony in the College ’s Draddy Gymnasium.

Manhattan College Student Honored As Outstanding Phys Ed Major Of The Year
Kaitlin Rodriguez, a junior at Manhattan College and a resident of Warwick, NY, was recently honored as the Outstanding Physical Education Major of the Year from Manhattan College by the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE).  NASPE, which has been setting the standard for the profession for over 31 years, is the largest of the five national associations of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Dance (AAHPERD).

Briarcliff Manor resident in engineering has co-authored a book and has been accepted to several prestigious doctoral programs
Francesco  Ricci, a senior in the chemical engineering program at Manhattan College and a resident of Briarcliff Manor, has co-authored the textbook Thermodynamics for the Practicing Engineer  by Louis Theodore, Francesco Ricci and Timothy Vanvliet. He has also recently been accepted into doctoral programs at Princeton University, Columbia University and Johns Hopkins University. The book was published by John Wiley and Sons, Inc. in 2009.

Pax Christi to award Manhattan College at its annual reception
Pax Christi Metro New York (PCMNY) has named Manhattan College’s Peace Studies program one of this year’s PCMNY Peacemakers. The award will be accepted by Dr. Joseph J. Fahey, co-founder of the program and professor of religious studies at the College. The program will be honored along with the New Sanctuary Movement and Eugene Moretta at its annual reception on Sunday, June 13, from 3 to 6 p.m., at St. Joseph’s Greenwich Village Casserly Hall.

The Riverdale United Nations Association (UNA) will award grants to a number of New York organizations. Distinguished Author To Speak At Manhattan College
Harvard University professor and author, Stephen Owen, will deliver a lecture at Manhattan College on Thursday, February 25th at 5:00 p.m. Owen is the James Bryant Conant University Professor at Harvard and editor of the forthcoming Cambridge History of Chinese Literature. His most recent books include The Late Tang: Chinese Poetry of the Mid-Ninth Century (827-860), The Making of Early Chinese Classical Poetry, and An Anthology of Chinese “Middle Ages”. The title of his talk will be ”Chang’an”. Chang’an (modern Xi’an) was the capital of the Western Han in the second and first centuries B.C.E. and of the Sui and Tang dynasties, from the end of the sixth to the beginning of the tenth century B.C.E. In the tang it was the largest city in the world, and its urban topography is well known, both from archeology and from the textual record. The event, which is sponsored by the Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholars Program, will be held in the College’s Academy Room, Leo Hall. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Exhibition Of Early 20th-Century Traditional Ethiopian Folk Art At Manhattan College
Thirteen pieces of traditional Ethiopian folk art by the artist W.F. Mamo are on display from now until June in the Lobby of Manhattan College’s O’Malley Library. This exhibition, which is open all day, is open to the public and is possible thanks to the generous gift of Arbab Ghatak, who donated nineteen pieces of early twentieth-century traditional Ethiopian folk art to Manhattan College.

Local Author To Discuss His New Memoir At Manhattan College
Author Joel Chasnoff will deliver a lecture at Manhattan College on Thursday, February 11 at 4:00 p.m. Chasnoff is a stand-up comedian and writer with stage and screen credits in eight countries. He has had his writings featured in The Idiots Guide to Jokes and The Big Book of Jewish Humor: 25th Anniversary Edition. Chasnoff will speak on his experiences as an American serving in the Israeli army in Lebanon, which is the subject of his new book, The 188th Crybaby Brigade: A Skinny Jewish Kid from Chicago Fights Hezbollah, (Simon and Schuster) out this month.  The event will be held in the Scala Academy Room, Leo Hall, Room 215.
