Distinguished Author To Speak At Manhattan College

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Harvard University professor and author, Stephen Owen, will deliver a lecture at Manhattan College on Thursday, February 25th at 5:00 p.m. Owen is the James Bryant Conant University Professor at Harvard and editor of the forthcoming Cambridge History of Chinese Literature. His most recent books include The Late Tang: Chinese Poetry of the Mid-Ninth Century (827-860), The Making of Early Chinese Classical Poetry, and An Anthology of Chinese “Middle Ages”. The title of his talk will be ”Chang’an”. Chang’an (modern Xi’an) was the capital of the Western Han in the second and first centuries B.C.E. and of the Sui and Tang dynasties, from the end of the sixth to the beginning of the tenth century B.C.E. In the tang it was the largest city in the world, and its urban topography is well known, both from archeology and from the textual record.

The event, which is sponsored by the Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholars Program, will be held in the College’s Academy Room, Leo Hall. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Owen received his B.A. and Ph.D. from Yale University. Elected a member of the American Philosophical Society and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, he was honored with a Mellon Distinguished Achievement Award in recognition of significant contributions to humanistic inquiry. He has received fellowships from the American Council of Learned Societies and the Guggenheim Foundation.
